BLASCO'S
NACHO LIBRE (PEDIGREE) Five Day Old American Bulldog This is Blasco's Nacho Libre, son of Blasco's Doc Holliday and Walker's Cherry Bomb. At five days old, life is all about eating and sleeping. From the start we should acknowledge, that Nacho's red nose and amber eyes are outside of the technical Breed Standard and considered cosmetic faults. We don't begin to care. Nacho is a fantastic dog and we accept this coloring on our yards, sometimes breeding and sometimes producing red nosed dogs. |
Mind and Body Development As tradition dictates, by four weeks Nacho spends more than half his time outside, wandering the hills and woods and playing with other dogs, young and old alike. This makes house training much easier, and allows his little brain and body to develop naturally into a strong bodied, strong minded country bulldog, not a soft house dog. Being outside, able to run and explore, dig a few holes, chase a few crows and squirels, these are important for the development of a well rounded American Bulldog. |
Head and Jaw Development This is our stepdaughter Maria at 19 years old. In this shot Maria has been playing with the little baby Nacho dog for a while now when he lets loose with a giant yawn. Nacho is about five weeks old here. Like that mouth? Wait till it's a couple years old. At this age, Nacho likes grinding his teeth on big beef bones, and chewing anything he can get his mouth around, hardening up those little jaw muscles. I let my puppies chew beef bones starting at two weeks. For those of you who wonder where big bulldog heads come from, it's the muscles on top of the head and the side of their jaws that are used for chewing, so give 'em stuff to chew! Nacho is about 4/5 Johnson or Bully type American Bulldog, with the rest being Performance Line and just a little bit of the Old Southern White. |
Dogs and Furniture Here's my son John at just under 10 years old, and Nacho, fast asleep in his lap at just under seven months. Some people don't let their dogs on furniture. We do. It's a matter of choice. Note the sort of ugly, early American styled Walmart quilt on the couch. That's how you keep your furniture in decent shape with more than a dozen big dogs that run and jump all over it. Walmart quilts are cheap to replace; furniture, not so much. |
Here's Nacho with trainer Natasha learning to stack. Natasha reports that Nacho is a major people pleaser and a very easy dog to work with, quick to pick up new things and proud when he gets it right. If you need a good trainer, email me; we have one. |
The Dog/Kid Relationship Nacho, much like his dad, Doc, is a major love dog. Here he is at seven months with daughter, Kat. Want to be assured your dog and kids have the right kind of relationship? Teach the dog to sit and wait in front of his food until he has permission to eat. Now teach it to listen to your kids in the same exercise. Let your kids be the ones to feed and water the dog. It will teach the kids responsibility and teach the dog that the kids are his masters, in charge and the source of food. Do the same with leash training, let the kids walk the dog with you and make the dog listen to them. |
Here's Nacho with his little brother, Bilbo. This is what I expect from even my younger dogs like Nacho, complete and total tolerance of the babies, whether they be dog or human. |
Further Development Here's Nacho at seven months. At this age, exercise and a high protein diet are everything. You cannot get a dog this built by jogging with him. If you want results like this you need a yard where the dog can run. A friend to play with helps too. Nacho spends a lot of time on a large developmental yard, with broken and very rough woodland terrain, forcing him to jump over downed trees, and watch his feet for obstacles and holes. It makes them strong and very agile, ready for anything. In the background, that's my up and coming girl, Blasco's Chainsaw Maggie, an epic daughter of Mambo you're sure to see more of in the near future. |
Nacho is a Smart Boy... Nacho at roughly 14 months watching YouTube videos with Maria. Nacho is a very smart boy. Apart from being very aware of and regularly watching television with great interest and for periods of time over 30 minutes or so, he also opens doors (or doesn't try if he knows they're locked), and he has a long list of words and phrases he understands. Regarding obedience, Nacho knows who he has to listen to and then he listens very well and knows quite a bit, but Nacho is a bulldog all day; if you're not an established "pack leader" over him, he'll do as he pleases. |
Nacho is Growing Here at 15 months Nacho still has that puppy look about him, but its beginning to fade. He's not going to be as big as his dad, Doc, but he's roughly 90 pounds and 24 inches at the withers here. Nacho is also a good gaurd dog, friendly all the time with basically anyone, including male strangers, but if you're a threat or don't feel quite right to him, Nacho will square off with you and stand his ground, no ifs, ands or buts about it. If you're wanting to mess with Maria, one of the kids or Becky, Nacho will bite. Bad guys, beware of dog. |
The Nacho Dog Nacho just flippin' LOVES Maria. Around here, I'm the top dog and all the dogs know it and respond to me with love and obedience, but every individual dog has that one person they favor above everyone else. With Nacho it's Maria. She's his favorite playmate, favorite person to snuggle on the couch with, favorite person to go bye-bye with, and if Nacho is in the room with the whole family and a bunch of visitors you can bet he's sitting right next to Maria. Male American Bulldogs tend to bond very strongly with the females in a household. Maria is Nacho's "pet human." Cool shirt, huh? Let me know if you want one and maybe I'll have some made for sale. |
